About the department

The first computer science class ‒ a first for Târgu Mureș ‒ was started at the Bolyai in 1990. Although the only computer lab of the time was equipped with computers that would now belong in a museum, it still held the students spellbound.

While the computer science students stepped over the threshold of the lab with excitement, the others peeped in curiously through the doorway. But that is now a thing of the past.

As the years went by, the computer science track developed steadily in every respect. The number of computer science classes grew, and with it the number of labs and teachers. The growth showed in quality too: the teachers honed their expertise on training courses, and the labs were equipped with ever more powerful machines. All this led to a remarkable improvement in the quality of teaching, which can be clearly seen in the results achieved.

Every student ‒ whatever their programme ‒ learns the basics of computing in the subject Information and Communication Technology. In these lessons students get to know how a computer is built and the environment required by the curriculum framework, and they learn the basics of word processing, browsing the internet, using e-mail, making presentations and using spreadsheets and databases.

Our students can also develop their computing skills beyond the compulsory lessons in an optional subject, where they get an insight into the secrets of web design, learn networking and image-processing techniques, and can control robots.

Developing our students' competitiveness is one of our key aims. Our students can test themselves in many secondary-school contests: the Transylvanian and Hungarian rounds of the Nemes Tihamér Computer Science Competition, the county and national subject competitions in computer science and in applied computing, the team competition organised by the Al. Papiu Ilarian National College, the ECN competition of Sapientia University, the NMG Open competition of the Nagy Mózes High School in Târgu Secuiesc, and many more.

The competition we offer ourselves is the Kalkulusz competition, held as part of the National Subject Competition of Hungarian-language Secondary Schools in Romania, which we organise in programming and applied computing categories.

At the end of grade XII, students on the mathematics‒computer science track can take the professional certificate exam (atestat) in computer science and so obtain an assistant programmer certificate. This exam has two parts: the first is a practical exam (solving database, programming and word-processing tasks), and the second is the preparation and defence of an independent project (a website, educational program, game, application, etc.).

Our school has an ECDL centre, so students can enrol at a reduced price and obtain the ECDL certificate. Our computer science teachers hold Certiport and Oracle instructor qualifications, and students have the opportunity to extend their hardware knowledge, learn more advanced database management and obtain internationally recognised certificates for the qualifications they gain.
