About the department
Writing about secondary education in 1910, Babits Mihály said that the aim of teaching literature is to teach thinking and speaking.
We see it no differently today. For a person who can think sees not only the problem but also the links between cause and effect. They recognise the best route to the solution and are able to plan it. A thinking person also knows that the first step towards achieving a goal is putting it into words, and that putting things into words brings them closer to themselves and to other people.
But it is not enough just to see clearly and to put the world and the facts into words. We also absolutely need to live our emotions, to be able to feel what others are going through, to practise the uplifting joy of belonging together and to be aware of its sustaining power. Even within the narrow, constrained possibilities of our existence, we need the play of freedom, or the freedom of play. That is what literature is for.
That is why the teaching credo of our school's Hungarian teachers reads: through encounters with works of literature, to teach thinking and speaking, and to help students experience and understand emotions.
Because we believe “that literature, that humankind, has a chance”.
