About the department
Mathematics is the intellectual heritage and pride of Bolyai Farkas Theoretical High School.
Our school's namesake, Bolyai Farkas, was one of the most important Hungarian mathematicians of the 19th century; his son, Bolyai János, wrote his name into the history of science as the creator of non-Euclidean geometry. The Mathematics department carries this tradition forward in a living way today: from talent development to the baccalaureate, it offers our students demanding and comprehensive preparation. Year after year our students do well in prestigious national and international competitions — the Transylvanian Hungarian Mathematics Competition, the National Hungarian Mathematics Olympiad and the International Hungarian Mathematics Competition, which our school, Târgu Mureș, hosted in 2019. Students drawn to competition problems and to the beauty of mathematics can deepen their knowledge in the workshop of the Vályi Gyula Mathematics Circle.
