About the department

“You are as many people as the languages you speak.” The members of our four-strong department consider the old saying timely, since language learning and language skills are of particular importance today.

Most of our students learn German as their second foreign language, and about 30 students in each year group learn it intensively, as their first foreign language. We German teachers help our students to master the German language, to develop their communication skills and to get to know German culture and traditions, both in lessons and in out-of-class activities.

Every member of our department has taken part in several professional training courses in Romania and in Germany. Our work is supported by many textbooks, grammar workbooks and audio materials published in Germany, a library of 400 volumes, and teaching aids and equipment (laptop, projector, CD players). We received most of these materials from the ZfA (the Central Agency for Schools Abroad of the German Foreign Office), as we are a DSD school and a PASCH school. The “Schools: Partners for the Future” initiative (PASCH) is a global network of schools that give Germany and the German language a special place in their teaching. The network now has more than 1,700 members worldwide. Our grade XII students can take the DSD II advanced language exam free of charge.

The department's most important activities: the DSD language exam, the German subject competition, the professional certificate exam (atestat) for the grade XII intensive classes, the Kangaroo competition, “Wer weiss was” (Who knows what? contest), trips to the Saxon region of Transylvania.
